The quality of your water is the starting point for choosing the best water-soluble fertiliser for your growing conditions.

To make optimal use of fertilisers and grow top-quality plants that command a high sale price, fertiliser and water must work in perfect harmony. Poor irrigation water quality is the main cause of many yield and growth problems. It is therefore important to analyse water quality and choose the right fertiliser for your specific crop and growing situation. This is crucial, because the salts in irrigation water affect the EC and pH of the soil, which in turn affects the crop.

Step 1:

Analyse your irrigation water (the water used to feed and water your plants). Check not only the pH and EC values but also the bicarbonate (HCO3) level and the composition (the various elements).

Step 2:

Determine whether the water needs to be acidified. We recommend acidifying the water if the bicarbonate level exceeds 2.5 mmol/litre (= 152.75 g/l). The right acidification method depends on a number of factors. Please contact your ICL consultant for individual advice. Remember that water quality may change when you mix source water with rainwater. Also bear in mind that you need to adjust your fertiliser programme when the rainwater supply is replenished.
